Tuesday, October 22, 2019 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Supporting Students While Ethically Leveraging Data:
The Appropriate Use of Data for Learning Analytics Guiding Principles

Presented by: Beth Martin & Brian Yandell

Learning analytics practices continue to increase on campus – both centrally and locally. How does that affect instructors, instructional staff and students? Are you using learning analytics practices in your teaching? What data are you accessing that might help you answer questions you have about your course, your students and your teaching? Do you have concerns about the ethical use of student data? Beyond FERPA, what  other considerations do you need to keep in mind in terms of handling student data?

Beth co-chaired LADUS and is a Professor (CHS) and Assistant Dean for Assessment, Teaching & Learning; School of Pharmacy.

Brian is a Professor of Horticulture and Statistics, Director of Biometry Program, and Interim Director of the American Family Insurance Data Science Institute.

Beth Martin (School of Pharmacy) and Brian Yandell (Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery) were on the ad-hoc Learning Analytics Data Use Subcommittee (LADUS), which was charged to establish guidelines for the use of data for learning analytics as an educational practice. Come find out more about these guidelines, which will serve as a foundation for future policy.

This is part of a series of learning analytics events co-sponsored by the Educational Innovation (EI) Initiative and DoIT Academic Technology.
