This includes pedagogical discussions and technology demonstrations through Faculty Engagement programs, learning technology trainings from Learn@UW, on-campus sessions for Information Technology Academy scholars, technology workshops from Software Training for Students and special campus events we host or co-host. STS: Linux in a Day

Linux belongs to the family of Unix-like operating systems. The skills learned in this course may also be applied to Mac OS X, BSD, or Solaris, among others. This class is designed for new users but would be an excellent refresher for more experienced users.
Topics include:

What is Linux?
Command structure
Navigating the operating system
Creating files and directories
Copying, moving, and deleting files
File permissions
Archiving and compressing files
Shell scripting basics
Shell arithmetic
Loops (for, while)
Customizing the Bash shell
Changing GUIs
Basic Windows emulation
Command line tools
Network and hardware configuration
Setting up a basic Apache server

Note: Software Training for Students workshops are only available to currently registered undergraduate or graduate students of UW-Madison. Faculty, staff and former students are not eligible to attend our training.
