Active Teaching Lab Recap: Kaltura MediaSpace Updates

At the March 7, 2019 Active Teaching Lab, 17 participants explored what’s new in Kaltura MediaSpace, including how to use Interactive Video Quizzing effectively. Attendees shared examples of practical and creative ways to capitalize on Kaltura tools for improved student learning and engagement.

Takeaways

  • Shorter videos reduce cognitive load and attention lapses while also easing the process of revising and updating content. Break your content into multiple 5-minute videos rather than one 20-minute video.
  • Use Chapters and Slides to help viewers navigate recorded content. The ability to jump to a desired section to review greatly increases the convenience of a video for student learning.
  • Add subtitles to video for increased accessibility (required by UW-Madison policy for all non-text web elements). 3Play and CaptionSync are the university-approved vendors for captioning services, but editable auto-captioning may be coming soon!
  • Identify the analytics available for Kaltura media—they’re different than Canvas learning analytics—and decide what and how data may help inform future instruction and content creation.
  • Use interactive video quiz questions to help students assess their learning in real-time and make key takeaways more salient.
