Active Teaching Lab Recap: Using Video in Canvas

On December 6, 2019, participants of the Active Teaching Lab met to discuss the use of video by students and instructors. The focus on was on how to best design and prepare videos with storyboards as well as ideas for student-curated content.

Takeaways

  1. Keep it short to reduce cognitive load and attention lapses, and simplify content revision and updates. Use four 5-min videos rather than a 20-minute one. If longer, organize it with Chapters and Slides to increase viewers’ agency to navigate content.
  2. Add captions and subtitles to videos for increased accessibility (required by UW-Madison policy for all non-text web elements). 3Play and CaptionSync are university-approved captioning vendors. Add for Youtube, Google Slides, PowerPoint.
  3. Add interactive knowledge checks in Kaltura or with H5P to help self-assess learning in real-time.
  4. Have students curate or create video examples or explanations of course content!

The Active Teaching Lab is a Faculty Engagement program with sessions held on Wednesdays from 1:00-2:00pm and Fridays from 8:30-9:45am in the Middleton Building (1305 Linden Dr.), room 120.
