Starting in fall 2017, Top Hat — UW-Madison’s preferred Student Response System (SRS) in the Learn@UW suite of tools — will be fully integrated and available to use with Canvas. Currently, Canvas instructors must manually import grade information from Top Hat, while a Top Hat integration with D2L allows instructors to automatically export grades. This will switch starting in August.
Due to technical limitations with the Top Hat integration, it can only be turned on for one of the university’s learning management system (LMS) without incurring additional expenses for students. Initially this integration was enabled for D2L as the majority of courses on campus were run on D2L. With the ongoing transition to Canvas as the single, centrally supported LMS on campus, it is projected that Canvas courses will outnumber D2L courses by fall 2017. Switching the Top Hat integration from D2L to Canvas will ensure ease-of-use for the majority of instructors.
To learn more about Top Hat or about Top Hat’s integration with Canvas, please register for one of these free, one-hour training sessions:
- Top Hat Basics: Intended for those with minimal or no experience with Top Hat.
- Top Hat and Canvas: Designed for those who have used Top Hat before, but want to understand how switching to Canvas will impact their use of Top Hat.
Our campus Top Hat representative, Maggie O’Rourke, will also be available during the week of April 24th for individual sessions and demos. Please email her directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Instructors can use Top Hat for free, while students must purchase a license. Find out more about Top Hat.
If you already use Top Hat, but have not started using Canvas, refer to the transition schedule to know when your unit will move.
